Capgras Delusion: A Delusional Misidentification Syndrome

Capgras delusion is a type of disorder that occurs due to mental or neurological disturbances. Scientist’s believes that the disorder involves misidentification of people, places and objects. Most commonly this delusion is observed in patients diagnosed with brain injury and also especially in older age individuals.

Joseph Capgras is the first one to identify this disorder and hence the disorder is named as Capgras. This delusional syndrome was initially reflected as a purely psychiatric disorder and looks psychoanalytical in nature. The disorders appear to be a rare and freaky syndrome. Many theories have been proposed to explain the capgras delusion. Capgras delusion has a more complicated and organic basis, that can be easily understood by observing neuroanatomical trauma associated with the syndrome.

The better way is to follow Individual therapy which suits to treat the individual’s delusions. Constancy is needed in establishing a therapeutic affinity without approving the patient’s delusional system. Individual therapy will be apt to treat the individuals’ delusions. Endurance is necessary in creating a therapeutic affinity without constituting the patient’s delusional system. Cognitive technique includes reality testing and reframing. Antipsychotics and other therapeutic drugs can be used with relative success.
